Findmypast is a homegrown family history company that helps people discover their origins. It started in the UK but now has millions of customers around the world, who use its family records to trace ancestors, build family trees and contact distant relatives.
Just joined and found out so much already.
This website has enabled me to confirm past family details which were thought to be true and unfold other details previously unknown to me.
On free trial all areas but keeps blocking access very annoying indeed
Not a very helpful site to find the info i'm after, And I wasn't given much notice that my free time had run out before the payment was taken out, I thought I had another 2 weeks
Very easy site to navigate. Lots of very good records and good to be able to search the newspapers too.
I want to try it out free and if I decide to subscribe I expect a new customer discount. However the discount vanishes if I go for the free trial. It's only 7 days!
The whole site just isn't as intuitive as your main competitor, searching sometimes felt like hard work and results had to be dug out rather than easily found, also the other site offers monthly payments and still comes in cheaper than your up front payment. Now you are not the only site with the 1921 census I fear you may have others jumping ship or not joining.
Very easy to use and navigate. Although payment is needed to get full access, I was able to start a family tree efficiently without payment.
It’s so easy to search if you have only one clue ! Interesting insight into different lives
Joined Findmypast several years ago and in my experience it is an excellent source of accurate records. Occasional transcription errors, if reported, are reviewed and altered where necessary. After several years browsing there are now so many records to find in so many categories that even I find it a little overwhelming. May I suggest a more comprehensive, user friendly index/listings which I'm sure new researchers or those with limited computer experience would appreciate.
It is nice to know that a subscription payment by Cheque or Postal Order has been received and to be informed of it promptly.
I like the fact that newspapers are included in the subscription. However I find the search facility fairly poor. I was looking for an individual in the 1939 Register and could find no trace. I found the registration on a different site quite easily, just with the name. Going back to Findmypast I put in the information including the piece number. No result was found. I find that annoying and wished I had only paid a partial subscription rather than wasting my money on an annual one. I will not be renewing unless the service improves.
Ability to import GEDCOM files, access to newspapers, access to BMD records and many more, ability to search records and print info.
This website is an absolute scam. Even after canceling my subscription, they still charged me. When I checked the site, I found out they never actually canceled it, despite me following all the steps. It feels like they’re deliberately ripping people off. Totally unacceptable!
Over come by the amount of information
Good range of helpful results to any search which are very relevant.
It's easy to find people if you know the correct details of them. I can't find living people that I'm looking for so its a bit disappointing but then that's never easy anyway. I'm pleased so far though.
FMP is a really useful genealogy tool, but disappointed I can’t pay monthly on the membership.
When getting a newspaper article it is difficult to save clearly focussed text. A pdf should be capable of being enlarged to give clear text. Your frequently aren’t.
The user interface is a bit clunky especially the link with newspapers. We were hoping to find specific Scottish records (1939 register) but we’re unable to do so. On the positive side plenty of other records available
