The process of ordering and delivery was very straight forward. The basket arrived quickly and was well packaged. It’s beautiful, light and well-designed with useful features like the fact that it fits under the washing machine door and that it’s flatter on one side, where you have the basket up against your body. John explained that this was all based on the traditional design for a wet-washing basket, which he was taught. The basket is very pale white willow, which I wasn’t expecting. However, John sent the following explanation: Yes, white willow is the traditional material for washing baskets so fabrics won't be stained. The willow in your basket was peeled only a month ago, before which the wood was still alive, so it's at its freshest and whitest just now. Willow can only be peeled in early summer, when the sap is raising as this is the only time the bark peels easily. You are correct, the bright white is ephemeral and it will darken with age, over a year or 2. White-blonde-yellowish- then light brown. The willow is peeled by scraping the bark off to reveal the white wood underneath, no chemicals or anything is used in this old natural process. I’m very happy with my purchase and as a previous buyer said-washing takes on a whole new meaning when you have a beautiful basket.
